10 Seaweed Facts

#1. Seaweed is a type of Macro Algae and unlike plants they do not have a root system but instead they have a Holdfast and only gain energy throguh photosynthesis

#2. Giant Kelp Can Grow nearly 1 metre in a day in the right conditions and can grow to nearly 50 metres in length

#3. There are three main tyes of seaweed.

Brown Species - such as kelps and wracks

Green Species- Including Sea Lettuce

Red Species - Like Dulse found near the bottom of the tide.

#4. Brown Seaweeds

Kelp beds are important nursery grounds for many juvenile species. They also form a protective barrier reducing wave energy before it hits the shore.

#5. Green Seaweeds

They are considered the most closely related to plants and it is believed that plants even evolved from this group of seaweed.

#6. Red Seaweeds

They are the most diverse classification of seaweeds with an estimated 7,000s species world wide. They are also the oldest know species, some fossils are 1.2 billion years

#7. Seaweed is used by many different industries due to its amazing properties and can be found in Ice Cream and Toothpaste.

#8. Marine photosythesisers like seaweed and phytoplankton contribute anywhere between 50% and 80% of the worlds oxygen.

#9. Seaweed has amazing potential as a sustainable resource in an ever growing world. Through farming and hand harvesting

#10. We need to protect seaweed as much as we do the rainforest if not more.
